An enthusiastic group of Columbians responded to the new Mayor's call for a committee of residents that focuses solely on how to make our city a better place to live and work in the future -- a sort of think tank. It's a place to talk about things observed in passing through town and begin to get questions researched and possible answers discovered. Ideas so far in the first three meetings have been discussed around buildings, starting with empty and unsafe places around the public square, and speed limit enforcement to improve safety downtown. In the meeting Monday, March 18, 2019 were, front row, from left: City of Columbia Mayor Pam Hoots, citizen volunteer and sidewalk improvement leader Mary Anne Loy, Adair Middle School volunteer Brody Blair, ColumbiaMagazine.com and city council member Linda Waggener, and Nanwood Market owner Sandy Conover. In back, from left, were: Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ellen Zornes, Rogers Trucking Company co-owner Chuck Rogers, Golden Rule Wilson realtor Elliott Burton, Columbia Attorney Dustin Warren, Nanwood Market co-owner Luci Irvin, citizen volunteer Richard Phelps and Libby's Gift Boutique co-owner Billy Joe Fudge. Questions and ideas are invited. Comments | Permalink Richard Phelps portraying Columbia founder Daniel Trabue

Richard Phelps as Daniel Trabue who, as a boy in Virginia, heard great things about Kentucky from an older brother and determined to make the journey when he grew up. In his lifetime he did make it to Kentucky, ultimately helping the governor establish the City of Columbia. In his presentation he tells of his travels, triumphs and losses, including the murder of his 12-year-old son by the bloody Harpe brothers. Clicking 'read more' takes you to the story and it contains a link to Mike Watson's chilling three part history of "the bloody Harpes." The "little house" Daniel Trabue (Richard Phelps) referred to in his presentation to the Columbia Adair Chamber of Commerce is this treasure on Jamestown Street in Columbia, KY. He said he built the house for he and his wife Mary "overlooking the town he helped the governor lay off - Columbia, the county seat of newly formed Adair." Comments | Permalink Older Photos
