Former department store abandoned, action pending
2020-01-18 - Corner of Jamestown Street and Public Square, Columbia, KY
This historic building on the Public Square in Columbia has been the subject of speculation for several years since it has been abandoned and allowed to deteriorate. Once the deterioration becomes a hazard to those around it, actions are forced. The City of Columbia, after a year of requests for the owners to respond, has placed caution tape around its exterior to alert pedestrians after more windows fell out in the storm of last Saturday, and further steps are beginning. In this keepsake photo from the early 1900s, the building appears to have been a grand seat of retail and service businesses. According to the All About Birds entry on the Northern Cardinal, "Only a few female North American songbirds sing, but the female Northern Cardinal does, and often while sitting on the nest. This may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases, but the female may sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male."
