Birds of Kentucky: Downy Woodpecker

2020-02-18 - Jefferson Co., KY - Photo by Pen
All About Birds has this to say about the downy woodpecker: "Downy Woodpeckers hitch around tree limbs and trunks or drop into tall weeds to feed on galls, moving more acrobatically than larger woodpeckers. Their rising-and-falling flight style is distinctive of many woodpeckers. In spring and summer, Downy Woodpeckers make lots of noise, both with their shrill whinnying call and by drumming on trees."

2020-02-18 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Steve Myers
In response to the question: Is there a hunting season on vultures? Steve Myers writes, "I wish there was a season on those menaces. My farm is in Coburg. I constantly have problems. These birds will attack livestock and humans as well, had one chase me. They are federally protected. Photo taken of a roost at Ramp 1, September 29, 2019, 685 Corbins Bend Road, Adair County, KY." - Steve
