Birds of Kentucky: Ruddy Duck

2020-02-22 - Jefferson Co., KY - Photo by Pen
A female ruddy duck, spotted at Long Run Park in eastern Jefferson County.

About Ruddy Ducks, All About Birds offers this quote from a 1926 account, "Its intimate habits, its stupidity, its curious nesting customs and ludicrous courtship performance place it in a niche by itself.... Everything about this bird is interesting to the naturalist, but almost nothing about it is interesting to the sportsman."

Scout given a new look

2020-02-22 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Debbie Dunn
The Gran’dog, Scout, got a new look recently when visiting Nana and Papa Dunn in Columbia. The glasses and hair bow were added after his grooming. Even if he might have been a little offended by the bow, he wouldn’t have sassed Nana who gives him such good, loving care.

Elizabeth Smith fighting for her life, prayers sought by family

2020-02-22 - Adair County, KY - Photo from family collection

Elizabeth Smith's family is calling for prayers for a miracle for her in a letter written by her Dad, Rodney, and read by Renae Smith at the February School Board Meeting.

Adair County High School designated Thursday, February 20, 2020 as PHight For Liz Day in honor of Elizabeth, an ACHS freshman who is battling a rare disorder called Pulmonary Hypertension or PH. The disorder has created such problems for Elizabeth that she is awaiting organ transplants for her lungs, heart, liver, and possibly kidneys.

Her father, Rodney Smith, wrote, "Healing is not a problem that God has. He is able. Is it His will, I sure hope that it is. Please, please, pray for the Lord to send deliverance from this awful place we are currently in, and back home with all of our family alive and well.

"I know you all have been praying for our family day and night and we sure appreciate it. If you will, please continue to help us bear this burden. Also, it has been an awesome sight to see everyone wearing their purple in honor of Elizabeth and the fight against Pulmonary Hypertension.

"This is such a horrible, deadly disease that very few people know about. Thanks to my hero, Elizabeth, more people in our communities have a better understanding about this life-robbing disease. Thanks to all of you for showing your support to her, and our entire family..."
