Scenic Kentucky: Cattails gone to seed

According to the Wikipedia entry on cattails, their "seeds are minute, 0.2 millimetres (0.008 in) long, and attached to fine hairs. When ripe, the heads disintegrate into a cottony fluff from which the seeds disperse by wind.
Typha are often among the first wetland plants to colonize areas of newly exposed wet mud, with their abundant wind-dispersed seeds. Buried seeds can survive in the soil for long periods of time. They germinate best with sunlight and fluctuating temperatures, which is typical of many wetland plants that regenerate on mud flats. KSP looking for 2 escapees from Hardin facility

State Police and the Hardin County Detention Center is requesting the publics assistance in locating two escaped inmates from the Hardin County Detention Center substance abuse program annex. At approximately 11:30 P.M. ET, Kentucky State Police was notified after discovering two inmates, Carl Steven Brooks and John Thomas Tinsley, Jr., missing from the HCDC annex.
The public is asked not to approach Brooks or Thomas if located. Anyone with information about Brooks or Thomas is ask to contact the Kentucky State Police at 270-766-5078 or by dialing 911. Comments | Permalink
