Brian Varney took a moment to look at brochures when he stopped by the Columbia Adair Tourism, EDA and Chamber of Commerce offices Wednesday, especially the Pikeville, KY brochure. He pointed to the "feud" section and said he was kin on both sides of his family to the Hatfields and McCoys. Work brought him west to Russell and Adair Counties but he has fond memories of his upbringing in Pike County. Contact the offices at 270-384-6020. Comments | Permalink

Wikipedia says that Oenothera biennis is a very useful plant: "The evening primrose was introduced to Europe in the early 17th century as an ornamental plant in botanical gardens, without recognition of their ancient use as medicine. However, indigenous tribes in North America (namely the Cherokee, Iroquois, Ojibwe and Potawatomi) were using the plant as food and medicinal crop for hundreds of years. Today, the evening primrose is mainly known as garden plant and as medicinal plant in specialized sectors. However, almost all parts of the evening primrose are edible and medically or cosmetically applicable. This includes the roots, leaves, blossoms, flower buds and seeds." Comments | Permalink
