Kentucky Color: Thingamabobs

2021-10-06 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge
By Billy Joe Fudge

These Macho Fern Thingamabobs are, in reality, sporangia. Sporangia are spore producing structures. Given the right conditions each spore will develop both the male and female sex organs and pretty soon there will be the pitty patter of little Macho Ferns running all over the place. Without getting into a lot of details, I think you can figure the rest. In other words, sporangia do the same thing for ferns and mosses as flowers do for most plants.

Although there is no symmetry in nature there is almost always balance and though there is much competition for space, sunlight, water, nutrients, etc., there is much teamwork in preserving the individual species while perpetuating the health and vigor of the ecosystem.

And beauty is where you find it.
