Most all of us are now familiar with the, "life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you gonna get" quote. Well the same could be said about nature also. This is most certainly the "trifecta of weird" and certainly takes the cake.
It all started out as a Butternut (White walnut) growing on the creek bank. The creek eroded all the soil around the roots on the near side which allowed the tree to lay over on the creek bank with about half its roots still intact. The two far trees seem to have been limbs that turned upward making individual trees by putting roots down through the rotting heartwood which is now completely gone and around the outside of the trunk as well. You can see through the holes in the old trunk.
The nearest offspring is a root collar sprout that is suffering the same fate from erosion as did the parent tree. Comments | Permalink Older Photos
