Kentucky Color: Erosion Control

Well over a hundred years ago, when this ol' White oak was just a young sapling, his roots were underground. I'm sure there were several existing trees that had been holding the soil in this ephemeral channel that have since succumbed to the forces of nature, leaving this tree to fight the erosion battle alone. Now, with many of his roots exposed, it is plain that those same forces of nature are still at play and that there will be just a matter of time before he goes the way of the prior generation. He should be an inspiration to us all!

Concord School, Fairplay, KY, 1909

In the background of the school group picture is the old log Concord Methodist Church house, 1 1/2 miles south of Fairplay, KY. It was used for our school house from 1909 to the mid-term of the session of 1911. After this, the school moved to a new one room school house 1/2 mile farther south on John Bennett's farm. It was built by our parents and called Walnut Grove School.
