This early blooming harbinger of spring is, Harbinger of Spring. Yes, that is its name! Also known as Pepper-and-salt, it is one of the very earliest blooming wildflowers in the Great Wooded South. It is always in such a great hurry to announce the imminence of spring that it launches its stems upward and blooms for the most part, prior to putting on a single leaf. Harbinger of spring is in the parsley family and claims close kin to carrots.
As you might expect with them being cousins to carrots, their roots consist of tubers and are said to be edible. I suspect there would take a lot of digging to come up with a meal for a family of four. Comments | Permalink
