Some say to look for morels where there are mayapples

2026-04-02 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Donna Rieder.
Some people say to hunt for morels where there are Mayapples. While Mayapples and morels show up around the same time each year and both prefer the same growing habitat, the best place to look for them is near old trees, especially ones with loose bark or bark that has fallen to the ground.

Hunting the Elusive Morel

By Donna Rieder

Dry Land Fish, Land Fish, Woodfish, Fisharooms, Wood Chicks, Hickory Chickens, Forest Taters, Molly Mushers...whatever you want to call them, Morel mushrooms are the king of all mushroomsand are hunted by mushroom lovers everywhere.

True morels are highly prized edible fungi from the genus Morchella, distinguished by their honeycomb-like, pitted caps that are completely hollow inside, with the cap and stem joined at the base.

Mushrooms need adequate moisture since they have a water content of 90%, so the best time to forage for morels is mid-Spring, often just a few days after it rains, and when ground temperatures reach 53F. The best places to find them are in moist, forested areas, particularly around dead or dying trees like elm, ash, poplar, and old apple orchards. Creek banks, river bottoms, and ravines provide the moisture they thrive in.

Online boat registration renewal option

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - Team Kentucky is making it easier for boat owners to stay current on their vessel registrations with the launch of a new online renewal option on April 1, 2026. Boat owners can now skip a trip to their local County Clerk's office and renew their registration online to save valuable time.

"We're excited to give Kentucky boat owners even more choices this spring to spend less time in an office and more time enjoying the open waters," said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray. "This new boat renewal option expands our existing online vehicle registration service to give Kentuckians a more convenient way to be served."

Boat owners who prefer in-person service may still renew at their local County Clerk's office. To renew boat registration online and review more eligibility criteria, visit https://drive.ky.gov/Pages/Online-Registration-Renewal.aspx.

New 2026-2027 Kentucky Highway Map available

Maps are available at Kentucky rest areas and welcome centers. To download an electronic copy or request a printed copy, visit transportation.ky.gov.

From Naitore Djigbenou/Allen Blair

Frankfort, KY - On April 2, 2026, Team Kentucky released its new 2026-2027 Highway map showcasing that the commonwealth has something for everyone to enjoy, including historic horse landscapes, diverse trails, and accessible attractions that prove no matter where you land, adventure and entertainment await.

From engaging with nationally acclaimed authors at Russellville's Author Fest, enjoying the Biscuit and Bourbon Derby event in Louisville, or jamming at the Laurel Cove Music Festival in Pineville, the 2026-2027 Official Highway Map highlights eclectic entertainment while offering a traditional map for those who prefer unplugged navigation. A collaboration between the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Tourism, Arts & Heritage Cabinet, the map promotes ADA-accessible attractions, themed trails, and festivals and events.

"We've broken our tourism record for three consecutive years because there is no limit to what Kentucky has to offer - whether that be our world class bourbon, adventures for families, one-of-a-kind Thoroughbred industry or world class culinary scene," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "That's why we're encouraging everyone to enjoy our New Kentucky Home and build memories that will last a lifetime. There's no wrong turn in Kentucky."

Students present work, find inspiration at English Conference

By Duane Bonifer

One of the themes at this year's Sigma Tau Delta convention was resilience. For the Lindsey Wilson University students who attended the annual meeting of the international English honor society, other themes might have been impressive, extraordinary and amazing.

A total of 19 students attended the four-day conference, which was held March 29-April 1 in New Orleans and funded by a university grant. Seven LWU students presented their research, and the other 12 attended as observers, making the Lindsey Wilson delegation one of the largest to attend the conference, which attracted more than 1,000 undergraduate students from U.S. colleges and universities.

"We always tell our students how extraordinary their work is, but for them to hear from people at other schools how amazing their work is was really great," said English professor Rachel Carr '13, who was one of three Lindsey Wilson faculty to accompany the students. "Faculty sponsors at other schools were always coming up to us and saying, 'This work is incredible.'"

Funding approved for two road projects in Columbia

From Trey Stephens
City of Columbia | Assistant to the Mayor

On Thursday, April 2, 2026, the City of Columbia is extremely pleased to announce that the Kentucky State Legislature has approved plans for two major transportation infrastructure improvements in Columbia.

The first is on Rice Drive and Watson Street, where a project will be undertaken to address major drainage issues and prevent the area from facing significant flooding. The project will be a massive step towards ensuring that residents in that area of Columbia are safe in their homes and not cut off from emergency services during flooding events. This project was placed under the Kentucky State road plan for fiscal year 2027.

The second project is Burkesville Loop which has been approved for funding under the Local Assistance Road Program (LARP). This project will return the road to suitable condition for Columbia's citizens and keep the residents of that road safe.

Mayor Hoots says she and all of Columbia's 5,000 citizens owe a massive debt of gratitude to Representative Amy Neighbors and Senate Majority Leader Max Wise for their tireless work on these two projects, both of which will have a profound effect on our community.

Health note: what to do for possible heart attack

Jim Sproles shared a heart health note: I have attended CPR classes over the years, but was never told this particular scenario. I was told that when your body starts sweating profusely for no apparent reason followed by what feels like a spasm at the end of your esophagus, that is your body’s warning sign.

When you are alone and have a heart attack, what are you gonna do? A really good post that can't be shared often enough follows.

Letter: Calendar photo brings back memories

Gracie (Antle) Ross writes:
Always looking for family connections...I came across the calendar from 1953, given out by Sam Aaron General store in Glens Fork, KY. Sam was my uncle. We had this same calendar in our house. My family lived in Louisville. On our many trips to the "country", we always stopped to visit Uncle Sam, Uncle Paul, Aunt Jewel and Aunt Nettie.

I loved that store. They kept a supply of everything from eggs to fabric. I am now 82 years old and have lived for many years in Texas. My ancestors are all Adair County and Russell County born and bred. Many cousins are still in the area.

Such fond memories I have of my KENTUCKY home. -Gracie

Writers' Day 2026: the Ford's Valley Incident

"A Brief Recount of the Ford's Valley Incident (Writers' Day Version)"
Written and Read by Katelynn M. Molesky

If you've never heard of Ford's Valley, then that's nothing unusual - they say even the state itself has forgotten about it, seeing as it often finds itself left off the census entirely. Not that it would make that much of a difference anyway...

If you ask anyone that's been there, they'd say the entire place is dead, practically a ghost town by now. After all, who'd want to stay in a place where nothing ever happens - and definitely who could afford to when there was nowhere to work?

Besides, who'd want to linger too long when there's potentially still a killer on the loose? Or so the common legend says... I can say outright that this is a long, complicated tale and I've only got so little time to tell it - so I guess I'll skip over all the meat and present you with just the skeleton for now.
