KY General Fund and Road Fund receipts for January 2026

Frankfort, KY - State Budget Director John Hicks reported on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, that January's General Fund receipts totaled $1,358.5 million, a 3.7 percent decrease in collections compared to January 2025 totals. The official revenue forecast calls for General Fund revenues to decline by 1.3 percent in FY26. Based on year-to-date collections, revenues can fall 1.6 percent over the final five months of the fiscal year and meet the estimate.

Pertaining to January General Fund revenues, Hicks noted that "Total receipts in January were $52.4 million less than what was collected in 2025. A significant decline of $108.0 million in major business tax revenues was the primary reason. The prior year's January collections were inflated by approximately $92 million in nonrecurring business tax payments. Individual income tax collections declined by only 2.3 percent despite a 12.5 percent reduction in the tax rate from 4 percent to 3.5 percent that became effective January 1, 2026. Among the other major accounts, sales and use taxes were up 3.5 percent and property tax revenues rose 39.2 percent. The large swing in property taxes was due to a timing issue of the receipt of $29.1 million in the public service property tax in January instead of December."

February is Lamb Month in Kentucky

Lexington, KY - Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) officials and members of Kentucky's sheep and lamb industry gathered on Tuesday, February 9, 2026, to celebrate February as Lamb Month in Kentucky. KDA Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Warren Beeler presented a signed proclamation at Sullivan University's Lexington campus while also presenting culinary students with the American Lamb Board CurricuLamb - educational materials about American lamb designed for chefs.

"Many Kentucky farmers chose to add sheep to diversify their livestock options," Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell said. "Packed with protein, lamb is a perfect lean meat. But sheep are also an excellent source of milk and fiber as well. Every day, but this month in particular, we salute the value sheep and lamb add to our farms."

About 5 million sheep are raised by roughly 80,000 farmers and ranchers across the United States. With more than 12 million acres of agriculture land in Kentucky, the Commonwealth is home to 74,000 head of sheep and lamb. Those 74,000 are spread over more than 2,774 sheep producers who are dedicated to producing high quality products for consumers.

ACSO: Watch out for scam callers

From Sheriff Gary Roy
Adair County Sheriff's Office

An Adair County resident received a call from a man identifying himself as a Russell County deputy sheriff and gave a badge number. He was familiar with where she worked and lived. He went on to advise she had a failure to appear warrant. He began to try and obtain personal information from her, and she stated he was very professional and convincing that he was an officer. Russell County Sheriff's Office advised this is a scam.

As your Sheriff, I want residents to know that agencies in this area will not call you and tell you that you have a warrant of arrest and ask for personal information. So if you get this type of call do not give any personal information out and hang up immediately. Then report it to a law enforcement agency.

Thank you, Sheriff Gary Roy

Helmets are the best choice when riding

Since at least 2000, helmet use in cycling has increased thanks to better education, laws, and stylish options, but many cyclists - especially adults - still ride without one.

In fact, some sources say about half of adults do not wear a helmet. It's a bad choice. In fact, the numbers are all against riding without a helmet. Proportion of non-fatal bicycle injuries treated in emergency rooms involving head injuries: About one-third.

Thoughts of Spring are eternal...

2026-02-10 - Harrodsburg, KY - Photo by Mike Watson.
Mike writes, "Our daffodils and the Crocus have pushed up several weeks ago. We were concerned the 4 inches of snow and the 2+ inches of collected sleet and freezing rain that followed in Harrodsburg would surely crush the growth. But at 2pm on Monday, January 9, 2026, a quick glance proved that Spring will come once more. The photo shows just how much snow/ice is still around in the great frigid Bluegrass.

Traveling along highway 127 to Russell Springs and the Parkway to Columbia illustrated the accelerating melt here in the Great Wooded South."

Phelps: Nostalgia the Star in 2026 Super Bowl TV commercials

By Duane Bonifer

Americans might be deeply divided over cultural, political and social issues, but advertisers think nostalgia might be an ingredient that can help pull people together. Or at least get them to agree to enjoy the same potato chip.

That's the assessment of a Lindsey Wilson University business professor, who studied the dozens of television commercials that aired during Super Bowl LX on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

"I think the theme of this year's best Super Bowl ads was nostalgia," said Lindsey Wilson business professor JC Phelps. "We live in a time with a lot of political tension and a lot of uncertainty. People are kind of fatigued, and so nostalgia is something we can all look to to bring joy, to bring us together."

Phelps used his observations to lead a Monday morning discussion in his "Content Creation" marketing class, helping his Lindsey Wilson students understand the power of symbols and messages grounded in market research.

Basketball: Indians host Southwestern Warriors on Tuesday

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Saturday, February 7, 2026, the Adair County Indians fell to the Shamrocks of Trinity 62-46 in the Bill Smallwood Classic hosted at Berea High School.

The Tribe battled early, but were overpowered by the Rocks in the second half. Senior Dawson Gilbert led the scoring for Adair County with 21, followed by Landon Blakey with 13, and John Shehan with 9. Blakey and Shehan led the team in rebounds with six each. The team shot the ball 46% from the floor, a very solid 50% from the three point line, and a poor 46% from the free throw line.

Trinity, despite being now just 10-10, is an extremely talented team. They have played a very tough schedule and have just recently got their best player, Jayden Johnson, eligible. In addition, the Indians were without leading scorer Tylin George and rotational big man Truk Jennings.

The Indians will look to bounce back at they host the Southwestern Warriors (11-11) on Tuesday. Truk Jennings will return and Tylin George is also expected to return for today's matchup.

The Warriors come to John Burr Memorial Gymnasium on a four game losing streak, including a 56-48 loss to Somerset at home yesterday. The two names to watch from the Warriors are leading scorers Senior Zachary Hutchinson and Senior Jarret Simpson, who average 17.6 and 14.4 points per game respectively. The two are also the team's leading rebounders, with Simpson leading the way averaging 8 rebounds a game and Hutchinson averaging just over 5 a game.

Southwestern and Adair County have faced just three times since the turn of the century, with the Indians winning all of them, and they will look to keep that streak alive today.

Come out and support your Tribe at home with varsity tip off scheduled for 6:30pmCT, Tuesday, February 10, 2026, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are available at hometownticketing.com.

Basketball: Lady Indians head to Edmonson Co. on Tuesday

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Monday, February 9, 2026, the Adair County Lady Indians Varsity Basketball team fell to the Bethlehem Banshees 54-44 on the road.

The team now sets their sights on the Edmonson County Lady Cats (15-6) tonight. The Lady Cats come off a 54-33 win over Central Hardin at home this past Saturday, which was the most recent part of a four-game winning streak stretching back to January 20, 2026, for Edmonson County. The leading scorers for Edmonson are senior Cariann Williams and junior Shelby Sowders, who average 19.6 and 16.5 points per game respectively. They will be major names for the Lady Indians to try to slow down tonight. Williams and Sowders also dominate the boards for the Lady Cats. Williams is averaging a strong double double with 14.4 rebounds per game, and Sowders averages another solid 7.9 rebounds per game.

Mutual opponents between the two teams are Monroe County, Cumberland County, Glasgow, and Taylor County. Both teams defeated Glasgow and lost to Taylor, while the Lady Cats defeated Monore and Cumberland and the Tribe did not. Adair County has not beaten Edmonson County since 2004. They have played 5 times since, most recently in December of 2023, when Edmonson came out ahead by five points.

The game is set to get underway at 7:30pmCT on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Edmonson County High School, 220 Wildcat Way, Brownsville, KY.

LWU students express their voices in a crowd

10 Blue Raiders perform in 2026 All-Collegiate Honor Choir concert at Kentucky Center for the Arts.

By Duane Bonifer

A group of Lindsey Wilson University recently discovered the beautiful sound that can be created when a hundred voices sing together. The 10 Lindsey Wilson students were part of the 2026 All-Collegiate Honor Choir, which performed February 5 at Whitney Hall of the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville. The concert was part of the meeting of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.

Lindsey Wilson student Anna Kate Alexander '29 of Glasgow, Kentucky, said that performing in a 100-voice choir "was amazing."

"I keep telling people what an incredible experience it was because we got to sing with these talented students from other colleges and universities throughout Kentucky," said Alexander, who was a second soprano in the ensemble. "I got to meet people from all over the state and international students as well."

A medal for the worst cabin fever ever

By Phillip Coffey

"Cabin fever" is a bummer. When I think of cabin fever I think of Joe Hensely who was an older coworker when I was a mine inspector. He joined the Air Force in 1953 during the Cold War. It certainly was where 'the powers that be'sent him for a year.

Joe was stationed at Thule Air base now known as Pituffik Space Base. It is the most northern base of the U.S.A.,750 miles north of the Artic Circle.Located in Nothwest Greenland. On one occasion I said," Joe someone must have been pied off at you, (Not my finest moment, young people say stupid stuff - I sure did. Well I still do, with laughter following most of the time.

LWU events celebrate Centenary of Black History Month

Month includes special campus events, lecture by Appalachian scholar and display of 'Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians.'

By Duane Bonifer

The Lindsey Wilson University community will celebrate the centenary of the founding of Black History Month with a pair of university events, a special lecture and a display of great Black Kentuckians.

The theme for this year's celebration, established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, is "A Century of Black History Commemorations."

Black History Month started in 1926 as Negro History Week by Carter G. Woodson. Woodson, who was a graduate of Kentucky's Berea College and founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, chose to hold the celebration in the second week of February because it included the birthdates of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

Black History Month was first celebrated in 1970, and in 1976 President Gerald Ford recognized Black History Month, calling on Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."

This year's Lindsey Wilson celebration of Black History Month will also have a Berea connection as scholar and former Berea professor William G. Turner will give a talk on February 17, 2026, about Appalachia's connections to the Civil Rights Movement.

Basketball: Lady Indians head to Bethlehem HS

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Friday, February 6, 2026, the Adair County Lady Indians Varsity Basketball team fell to the Taylor County Lady Cardinals 75-40 on the road. The Tribe fell behind early, 18-9 at the end of one, and 37-17 by the half, and were simply unable to recover. The Lady Indians are now 11-9 on the season.

On Monday, the Lady Indians will travel to Bardstown to take on the Bethlehem Banshees (12-9). The Banshees come off a 64-42 win over Washington County this past Saturday. The two teams have faced various mutual opponents. Both have defeated Marion County, although Bethlehem did so more convincingly 70-29, compared to the Lady Indians 46-29 and 59-42 wins over the Lady Knights.

The other two mutual opponents are Campbellsville, who Bethlehem beat 66-24 and who the Lady Indians have lost to twice, and Green County, who Adair County beat 64-61 in double overtime and Bethlehem lost to 54-56.

Tonight's game will be the first time since 2010 that these two programs face off in the regular season. This game will be a renewal of what used to be a more frequent opponent for the Lady Indians. They faced the Banshees nine times between 2000 and 2010, but have only faced them once since. In the 2023 5th Region tournament, Bethlehem got the edge 67-31.

Tip off against Bethlehem is scheduled for 6:30pmCT on February 9, 2026, at Bethlehem High School, 200 Bethlehem Way, Bardstown, KY. Tickets are available at gofan.co.

Alumni play key role at Begley Scholars Day

Students from 48 high schools interview for Lindsey Wilson University's prestigious John B. Begley Scholarship.

By Duane Bonifer

Dr. Kate Durham Young '18 says that Lindsey Wilson University deserves a lot of credit for her academic and professional success.

That's why she spent part of her Saturday morning serving her alma mater.

Young was one of 17 Lindsey Wilson alumni who returned Saturday, February 7, 2026, for the university's annual John B. Begley Scholars Day. The alumni joined select university faculty, staff and students who interviewed 65 high school seniors from 48 high schools in five states and three countries. The students competed for three John B. Begley Scholarships that will be awarded to members of the university's Class of 2030.

Created in 1997 to honor John B. Begley, Lindsey Wilson's sixth president from 1977-97, the Begley Scholarship is one of the more prestigious scholarships in Kentucky higher education. Begley Scholars receive a full-tuition, room-and-board scholarship plus an unparalleled cultural enrichment experience. At least one returning Lindsey Wilson student is also named a Begley Scholar each spring.

Lexington, KY - Some nights at Rupp Arena feel borrowed from another era. Not recreated, not manufactured, but borrowed.

Saturday night against Tennessee was one of those.

The kind of night where the building carries itself a little heavier. The banners loom closer, the noise seems to hit another decibel. Kentucky basketball doesn't always need help remembering who it is, but sometimes it gets a reminder anyway.

This reminder came wrapped in denim this weekend.

Kentucky walked onto the floor wearing throwbacks inspired by the 1996 national championship team, the most dominant group this program has ever produced. "The Unforgettables".

Those uniforms weren't just nostalgia bait to fans, they were a challenge.....a standard. A quiet dare to live up to the weight stitched into the fabric. Of course, timing mattered. Thirty years removed from that title run, the Wildcats weren't celebrating history, they were honoring what it means to wear that sacred piece of cloth.
