Writers Day 2026: Meddlesome Jack

All the writers and readers were invited to share their Writers' Day presentations. Here's mine.

Meddlesome Jack
Written and Read By Linda Waggener

Oh, the places you’ll go! said the wonderful Dr. Seuss.
And oh, did I want to go places and see everything!

As a child, my grandmother had a name for me.
She called me… “Meddlesome Jack.”

I was curious about every one of Grandma Marcum's Boxes. Trinkets. Secrets. Sometimes she’d catch me exploring one of her personal spaces… maybe studying a beautiful pearl necklace like it was museum treasure. And she’d give me a smart pinch and say, “Get out of that, Meddlesome Jack.”

Palm Sunday celebrated in Christian churches

It's Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026, the Start of Holy Week. It begins the most sacred week in Christianity, bridging Jesus's popularity upon arrival and the shift to crucifixion on Good Friday. Jesus's entry on a donkey satisfies the ancient prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9, showcasing him as the peaceful and righteous king rather than a military leader.

Waving palm branches represents a declaration of victory, reflecting the belief that Jesus is the true king. It also foreshadows the passion and sacrifice that will culminate in the resurrection. Palms will be waived during worship at 10amCT at Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville St., Columbia, KY. An Easter Egg Hunt will be held at 3pmCT.

Carol Perkins: Looking forward to Easter Week

Previous Column: Metcalfe Co. celebrating America's 250th Anniversary

By Carol Perkins

Easter week. Oh, what a glorious time. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday. A full week of reflection and merriment.

At the Edmonton Baptist Church on Maundy Thursday, we always have a program featuring seven speakers who depict the last words of Jesus. One year, I recounted what Jesus said to John from the cross.

With suffering eyes, he looked at his mother and said, "Woman, here is your son," and to the disciple John, whom he loved, "Here is your mother." From that moment on, Mary lived with John, and he cared for her as if she were his mother.

Lanterns & Tombstones Cemetery Tours return April 3

The first installment of the Fifth Season of Columbia City Cemetery Walking Tour will take place at 7pmCT on Friday night, April 3, 2026. Dave Thomas and Mike Watson will lead participants through various parts of the more than two century year old graveyard, pointing out bits of interesting lore along the way.

This is a walking tour through the historic cemetery and participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket if it is cool, and your enthusiasm. Small flashlights will be provided to aid you in winding your way on the Tour.

The Tour will take place each month throughout the year--April through September, culminating with the annual Silent City Tour of 2026 in October. Each month the Tour and narration will be different from previous months.

There will be two "On-the-Road" Tours again this year--in May and August... Stay tuned for the cemetery locations as those plans are still in the works.

There will be some specific information repeated each month for emphasis and to inform those who have not previously attended.

The Tour will form at the edge of the Judicial Center parking area at Merchant and Monroe Streets, and will proceed up the drive to the Historic Cemetery. We will return to the same location. Please do not park in the cemetery.

Hope to see you there!

For more information, email Watson.kentucky@gmail.com, or call the Research Center at 270-380-1024.

LWU Education students learn from one of KY's best teachers

By Duane Bonifer

For an hour on Thursday, March 26, 2026, more than three dozen Lindsey Wilson University education students received a master class in teaching from one of the best and more innovative teachers in Kentucky.

Lindsey Wilson alumnus Scott Johnson '02 spent part of the afternoon with education students in the Doug and Betty Jean Moseley Auditorium of the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship, where he recounted his education career, offered advice on how to reach students, extolled the virtues of learning from students, and shared how his selfless act to help a student attracted national attention.

"The only thing that I get really, really teared up on is when I look back on my career of awesome students," said Johnson, who has been teaching for more than two decades.

A Burkesville, Kentucky, native, Johnson told the students how he struggled to find his first teaching job because he entered the job market "when there was a glut of teachers."

But once he started his teaching career at Edmonton Elementary in Metcalfe County, he began charting a path that has included being named 2025 Kentucky Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Kentucky Department of Education.

Letter: Developing solar power makes sense

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
Hilda Legg's well written article advocating the need to develop solar power makes sense. I read that many advances are being made in developing ways to access solar energy. Health care people and scientists are warning us about pollution caused by burning fossil fuels. Health issues result from polluted air and water.

'Nature magazines' alert us to damage done to our Earth Home already as a result of extracting and burning fossil fuels. Battles over extracting coal, oil, gas cause wars and destroy natural environments. I think we need to consider benefits of solar power and realize the harm fossil fuels are causing. We now have the 'know how' to extract power from our mighty solar source we rotate and revolve around. Let's do it!
