A Silver Alert is a public notification system used in the United States to broadcast information about missing persons, primarily senior citizens with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other mental disabilities, to aid in their safe recovery. The system is modeled after the Amber Alert for children and uses various media outlets to quickly disseminate information to the public.

2026-03-31 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Donna Rieder.
Donna writes, "Clifty Creek Farm added a new member to the family today! Daisy is 18 years old, sweet as apple pie, and is due to have a baby in a few months."

Donkeys are her favorite Guardian animal for protecting other livestock, because they "do a fantastic job, but they can also be very affectionate towards their humans if they're handled at an early age."

LWU student designs new Presidential Medallion

By Duane Bonifer

When Lindsey Wilson University holds its 123rd commencement ceremonies on May 1-2, 2026, LWU President William T. Luckey Jr. will preside over the commencement ceremonies while wearing a new presidential medallion, which was designed by Lindsey Wilson student Tezon Mitchell '27 of Greensburg, Kentucky.

The new presidential medallion, which is made of brass, features "Lindsey Wilson University" below elements of the crown of the university's iconic John B. Begley Chapel. Below the school's name are the lamp of wisdom and book of knowledge taken from the university's new seal, which appear inside of the the words "every student, every day," a phrase that is the essence of the Lindsey Wilson mission.

The year 1903 -- when the school was founded -- appears at the bottom. The lower half of the medallion is framed by a pair of new icons -- two swords, which refer to the university's Blue Raiders nickname.

Writers' Day: The Werewolf of Elizabethtown

By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress

Who forgot it? Surely nobody! Although... usually my stories start with these words. But not this time. Because in this case nobody remembers. Except the files, deep, deep in the shelves. To be exact: the chronicles of several towns and villages, which can be found in the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives in the capital, Frankfort. Because they report about incidents in the year 1778, which admitted only one conclusion then: a werewolf haunted the region of Elizabethtown.

Basically, it was pure coincidence that history student Milly Bookworm from Tulsa, Oklahoma, enrolled at the University of Kihei, found the story in 2015. For a seminar paper, she was researching at the Department for Libraries and Archives in Frankfort when she got into a conversation with an employee of the department.

Letter: thanks for posting about the siren test

Galen Gray wrote today after two alarms downtown:
Thanks for posting about the siren test. I had to do a Google search and it took me right to that page.

Columbia Magazine prints the notices from Grant Loy, Director Adair County Emergency Management, who is working to assure all sirens across Columbia are in good condition before the next need.

This was only a test. There was no emergency, however, it's hard to be sure, especially when there's more than one alarm as was the case today. Everyone is encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

Protecting Livestock by using Guardians

By Donna Rieder

For thousands of years, people have depended on guardian animals to alert them of danger and to protect their livestock.

Livestock predators come in all shapes and sizes, with the coyote being the most prevalent. Other predators, depending on where you live, are wolves, bears, foxes, and even birds of prey such as eagles and hawks. A large bird can easily swoop down and snatch a chicken or duck, or even a small lamb or goat kid.

One of the biggest threats to smaller livestock such as poultry or goats and sheep is the domestic dog. I've had livestock and poultry for decades, and every loss I've had was because of someone else's dog. They have no fear of humans, and sadly, they kill for sport, not for food.

Guardian animals come in many different forms, and each have their pros and cons; the farmer will choose the one that best suits their particular situation.

Phillip Coffey - Incoming Tide

Doubts, go ahead, bleed them all out, no fear.
Take a firm stand for the most common of mankind
Unable to handle the plate that has been served.
'Racing thoughts' - hunger of their small kindred.

Treasure all - answers often not given with a thought
In an instant in the abundance - lap of so much luxury.
Bended knee - take on the rising, angry incoming tide
Seldom measured in a day or even a thousand years.

Writers Day 2026: Meddlesome Jack

All the writers and readers were invited to share their Writers' Day presentations. Here's mine.

Meddlesome Jack
Written and Read By Linda Waggener

Oh, the places you’ll go! said the wonderful Dr. Seuss.
And oh, did I want to go places and see everything!

As a child, my grandmother had a name for me.
She called me… “Meddlesome Jack.”

I was curious about every one of Grandma Marcum's Boxes. Trinkets. Secrets. Sometimes she’d catch me exploring one of her personal spaces… maybe studying a beautiful pearl necklace like it was museum treasure. And she’d give me a smart pinch and say, “Get out of that, Meddlesome Jack.”

Palm Sunday celebrated in Christian churches

It's Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026, the Start of Holy Week. It begins the most sacred week in Christianity, bridging Jesus's popularity upon arrival and the shift to crucifixion on Good Friday. Jesus's entry on a donkey satisfies the ancient prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9, showcasing him as the peaceful and righteous king rather than a military leader.

Waving palm branches represents a declaration of victory, reflecting the belief that Jesus is the true king. It also foreshadows the passion and sacrifice that will culminate in the resurrection. Palms will be waived during worship at 10amCT at Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville St., Columbia, KY. An Easter Egg Hunt will be held at 3pmCT.
