Birds of Kentucky: Bald Eagle

2026-04-08 - Russell County, KY - Photo by Jackie Montgomery.
A beautiful Bald Eagle was spotted by Jackie Montgomery on Hwy 127 N near Russell County Elementary School. she writes, "I first spotted it eating fresh kill on the side of the road. It flew up into a tree where a crow was keeping watch. After graciously posing for some photos, the eagle lifted off. The crow flew above it, dive bombed it a few times, and sent the eagle flying to the east."

April is Goat Month in Kentucky

From Madison Pergrem Cannon

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky goat producers and industry stakeholders joined Kentucky Department of Agriculture officials at the Lakeview Park in Frankfort to proclaim April as Goat Month in Kentucky.

"Goats bring diversity to our agricultural landscape across Kentucky and more and more farmers are choosing to add them to their livestock," Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell said. "They add a uniqueness to farm life, but they are also an excellent source of protein and dairy products. This month we salute all that goats add to our state's agricultural outlook."

Russell Co. approved for $1.2M in KDPI funding

From Scottie Ellis/Brandon Mattingly

Frankfort, KY - In April, Gov. Andy Beshear announced further momentum within the state's speed-to-market and site development initiatives as 16 projects supporting future job growth and investment across 18 counties were approved for $12.4 million in state funding to improve Kentucky's available sites, including development in Russell County.

The Russell County Industrial Development Authority (RCIDA) is planning to acquire nearly 68-acres of industrial land that will allow the RCIDA to market and attract new business. The project was approved for over $1.2 million through the Kentucky Product Development Initiative (KPDI).

"Kentucky continues to lead on investing in site and building development initiatives, laying the groundwork for continued economic momentum and future job opportunities," said Gov. Beshear. "Our speed-to-market efforts are one of many business-friendly elements that separate the commonwealth from its competitors, and why businesses continue to choose this great state to locate, expand and invest in. Congratulations to these 18 communities on their approvals. I am excited to see the future investment, economic growth and jobs they will help secure."

Circuit Clerks celebrate National Donate Life Month

Adair Circuit Clerk Dennis Loy is proud to recognize National Donate Life Month this April, joining a nationwide effort to raise awareness for organ, eye, and tissue donation and encourage individuals to register their decision to save lives.

For decades, Kentucky's Circuit Clerks have played a vital role in this mission. In 1992, they established the nonprofit now known as Donate Life Kentucky Trust, which continues to lead public education and donor registry efforts across the Commonwealth.

Today, the impact of the Circuit Clerks continues through:
  • $20,000 in educational scholarships that empower students to share the impact of donation
  • Classroom programs that reach young people as they prepare to make their registry decision - available free to all Kentucky teachers
  • Community outreach that makes donation information accessible and easy to understand
  • Fundraising efforts that support transplant patients, caregivers, and donor families - support includes lodging near hospitals, transportation, meals, and other urgent needs during times of crisis.
"Donate Life Month brings our nation together to elevate this mission and bring it to the forefront," said Loy. "If everyone registered, we would not have a waiting list like we do today. We can all be hope. There are no age limits or health requirements to register as a donor. The decision to say 'yes' means the world to those waiting."

Writers' Day: A Rite of Spring...or A Wild Onion Tale

Written and Read by Mike Watson
Writers' Day 2026

The coming of Spring brings to mind an old story. When I was a young sprout, likely the late 1960s or very early 1970s, there was an occasion when, along with our Dad and Uncle Roy, I was witness to a comical scene at Fred Pickerell's store, located at Gadberry.

It was a lazy spring day and several men were gathered at the store, including Monty Gadberry, Joe Gadberry, Paul Frankum and Carl Turner.

Darlene Campbell a hit at ACGS April meeting

From Mike Watson

The Adair County Genealogical Society's April 6th meeting hosted our own Darlene Franklin Campbell, noted author, researcher, artist, and historical interpreter, and retired teacher.

The topic was one of considerable interest: Native Americans in Adair County and South Central Kentucky History. Well-known for her presentations on Native American culture and life, and DNA research, Darlene did not disappoint her audience. She touched upon the many local families that may have Native American blood lines as well as possible Melungeon links in their genetic and genealogical pasts.

The ACGS and the Adair Genealogy & History Research Center wishes to thank Darlene for a fascinating presentation!

Letter: Praise for The Mother Load/The Mother Load

Name withheld by request

I appreciate so very much these two articles. Both touch a place in my heart which I have never been able to articulate. My life as a mother was not anything I ever expected or imagined due to the depression my daughter suffered from, beginning as a small child. As we learned, it was genetic.

When you hear the statement "suffers with depression", believe it. Those with depression and/or mental illness, truly suffer! As a mother of a chid with depression and co-existing mental illness, little did I know how my life would be impacted as it has, and the lives of our entire family. All things a mother does felt unrelenting and magnified.

To this day as our daughter is now middle aged, it continues in so many ways despite efforts and years of learning to find ways transfer the burden off us. The natural burdens of a mother as described in "The Mother Load", don't just stop as the phone calls still come in. Even though a mother may not act on remedying the needs for her family, they are occupying her mind. And, in our case where we have had to raise a grandchild due the situation, it continues to impact future generations, and the "mother load" still grows.

I also sadly comprehend Donna Rieder's decision not to have children. My grandchild already states that idea in her future for the same reasons. Being a mother is not for the faint in heart. If someone you know suffers beyond the typical situational depression of being a mother, help them find the help they need!

The Grapes of Sawyer (Phase 2)

2026-04-07 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Robert Ellis, robertelliswoodworking.com.
Robert writes, "Phase 1 occurred a couple weeks ago when I took these cuttings from my vineyard. During that phase I buried them in sawdust until I could get around to transplanting them into the soil. For the next phase, plans are once again transplant them into plastic "pots" in an attempt to sell them later in the year...those that survive, that is.

I dug all the holes and Sawyer (my Grandson) helped with putting them into the soil, and of course piling up the dirt around them, with his favorite tool--his hammer--cause that's what boys do!"

Tebbs Bend Park Day Cleanup 2026 is April 11

From Mike Watson

For 30 years, thousands of volunteers have gathered at battlefields and historic sites across the nation to participate in the Trust's Park Day clean-up effort. Including Boy and Girl Scouts, Rotarians, Lions Club members, church groups, ROTC units, youth groups, Wounded Warrior groups and many others, more than 450,000 cumulative hours of labor have been contributed to projects large and small to keep our nation's heritage not only preserved, but also pristine.

Each year, thousands of history enthusiasts, community-minded citizens, families, Boy and Girl Scouts, ROTC units and more come together in an effort to help keep our nation's heritage not only preserved, but pristine. Activities are chosen by each participating site and can include building trails, raking leaves, painting signs, putting up fences and contributing to site interpretation.

In addition to the satisfaction that volunteer work brings, participants receive official Park Day swag and may have the chance to hear a local historian describe people and events of the past at their site. Park Day can also be used to fulfill the service requirements associated with scout groups, student organizations, training corps programs, many school systems, and more.

Park Day allows the American Battlefield Trust to cast a spotlight on beloved American landscapes nationwide. Projects will keep historic sites and battlefields clean, open and accessible for the enjoyment of all -- this year, Park Day projects included painting signs, garden maintenance, trash and leaf removal, marker clean-up, trail and fence building and more!

Join us at 9amCT/10amET on April 11, 2026, at the Tebbs Bend Toll House, 327 Tebbs Bend Road, Campbellsville, KY, for the 30th annual Park Day.

LWU Department of Theatre to present Heroines April 9-10

By Duane Bonifer

The Lindsey Wilson University Department of Theatre will retell parts of one of the classic works of literature.

The LWU Department of Theatre will present Heroines on April 9-10, 2026, at V.P. Henry Auditorium. The production, which is directed by Lindsey Wilson theatre professor Robert Brock, is free and open to the public. Both performances begin at 7pmCT.

Based on The Heroides by first-century Roman poet Ovid, Heroines features contemporary monologues told through a series of letters from the aggrieved women of classical mythology to the lovers who abandoned them.

Heroines will feel a bit like five one-act plays. That's because it will be presented in five monologues, each of which explores a range of themes that include betrayal, love, longing and neglect. While the monologues will be presented in modern settings, Brock said they do not lose the eternal messages Ovid gave them when he wrote them more than 2,500 years ago.
