New Lindsey students prepare for new adventures

By Duane Bonifer

Gracie Orr has been getting up most mornings this summer around 6 a.m. for her job as a lifeguard.

But on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Marion, Kentucky, resident and Lindsey Wilson freshman woke up an extra 30 minutes early so that she and her father, Josh, could drive 3-1/2 hours to Lindsey Wilson University for New Student Orientation.

"I'm excited to start building a community, and I'm excited to meet people I'm going to be in class with," Orr said before the start of New Student Orientation in the university's V.P. Henry Auditorium.

Orr and her father were among more than 400 students and family members who attended Lindsey Wilson's second New Student Orientation days of the summer on July 9-10, 2026.

What's In A Label?

By Narda Tate

A little while back, I bought a new set of sheets for our king bed. What a delightful surprise to find that inside the fitted sheet were little sewn in labels actually marking the top or bottom of the sheet. What a marvelous idea!

How many times had I previously gotten the bottom sheet placed on the bottom of the mattress only to find out I had put the side of the sheet on the bottom. Aaarrggh! Take it off, make a quarter turn and try again. Now before you think I am making a mountain out of a molehill, let me remind you that this was before the advent of fitted sheets with deep pockets.

The sheets back then needed a great deal of strength, stamina and determination to get them onto the mattress properly. In fact, I had often thought of suggesting that they make this activity one of the Olympic competitions. This would not be for the faint of heart!

But I had a revelation one time, that since I own these sheets, I could mark them with a magic marker and know before I started, which end was up -so to speak. I grabbed a marker of formidable size and marked my own label on the inside down at the elastic band. 3 cheers for me!

Until, not too long ago, our company had departed.

A conversation with Adair Supt. Faulkner

Adair County School Superintendent Jason Faulkner is nominated for a nationwide award. Mig Feuser, Adair Progress editor, talked with him about this honor and the state of the schools. This article shares Supt. Faulkner's goals and what they are based upon as he leads students pathways in our public schools.

Adair Progress: "You were recently nominated for the 2026 Excellence Award in Power Leadership and are one of only 16 superintendents nationwide selected. What was your reaction when you learned of the nomination, and what does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?"

Jason Faulkner: "Honestly, I was both humbled and honored to receive such a nomination. We pride ourselves in the Adair County School District for serving our students and supporting our staff. I don't often spend much time thinking about personal awards. Any recognition that any member of our staff receives is a direct reflection on the collective work happening across our district.

By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress

The event, promoted as the "World's Grandest Jet Event," has become one of the signature summer attractions in Central Kentucky and one of the largest gatherings of radio-controlled jet pilots and aircraft anywhere in the world. For one full week, Campbellsville becomes a meeting place for aviation fans, model aircraft builders, pilots, families and curious spectators who come to watch highly detailed jet models take to the air.

Grandparents come to life in childhood memories

By Kyle Ballou
Honoring his grandparents, Hollis and Cressie Antle

Out delivering, I passed by a place that made my heart flutter with memories.

Homemade biscuits Grandma made with her rolling pin. Sausage and bacon from the hog they raised.

A place where circus peanuts and hard candy sat in glass dishes on the counter, and homemade chocolate pies cooled beside chocolate oatmeal cookies for eager hands where the goodies never lasted long.

Where the cold Mountain Dews waited in the bottom refrigerator drawer as a reward for a hard day's work.

Looking back at July 4th, celebrating 250 years

By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress

Columbia and Adair County celebrated America's 250th birthday in style over the Independence Day weekend, as thousands of residents and visitors gathered across the community for three days of patriotic festivities, family activities and fireworks.

The celebration began Friday evening with Columbia Nights on the Public Square, where local musician Jack Fishback entertained visitors as families filled downtown to enjoy the festive atmosphere. At the same time, Thunder Over Casey Creek once again drew a large crowd for an evening of food, fellowship and a colorful fireworks display. Families spread out lawn chairs and blankets while children enjoyed glow bracelets and sparklers before the night sky lit up with fireworks.

Spotted Lanternfly moves closer to Adair

By Mig Feuser / The Adair Progress

A pest that once seemed like a problem for other states is now a Kentucky problem, and local residents are being asked to keep their eyes open before it becomes an Adair County problem.

The Kentucky Office of the State Entomologist recently reported that some Spotted Lanternflies are now in the older nymph stage, the time when the young insects begin showing their red coloration. The office shared photos taken in Boone County and asked residents to report possible sightings, especially from counties where the insect has not yet been confirmed. That includes Adair County.

Barred owl hurt during holiday now doing ok

The Barred owl couple that became neighbors of Billie Kay and Todd Wilson in their yard in the Town Creek valley of Hurt Street have been making news this year.

This week one owl was injured over the holiday weekend but Billie Kay has posted an update that it is doing ok now. The Wilsons first knew of their special friends as they began hearing a unique sound in the evenings in late winter. After research and study, they realized the sounds were those of owls.

Carol Perkins: The Celebration

Previous Column: A Sack of Potatoes

By Carol Perkins

The 4th of July began for me on Thursday night when my friends and I attended a free concert at Skypac called "Star Spangled Spectacular", featuring Broadway star Stephen Amerson and an assembly of local talent as the choir.

It was a spectacular night of patriotic music and songs. The highlight was when the orchestra played a song from each branch of the military, and those who served stood for a rousing round of applause.

On Friday, Edmonton "put on the dog" for the 4th with a parade, followed by a free concert by the band Otis, followed by The Kentucky Headhunters. With the threat of storms and the fact that none of us could walk well, we sat in the car, watched the crowd, and listened to the music. I loved that a few of our local youngsters opened up for the bands. They will never forget it.

Speaking of cars, I wasn't sure about parking. Buses shuttled people from the high school to Bowling Park, and for those who needed a walker or were in wheelchairs, ample parking was available, though the distance to the concert site remained considerable.
